The Clarke Central High School drama department will showcase one-act plays “Appropriate Audience Behavior” and “The Lottery” in Mell auditorium on Oct. 11-13.
As the 2018-19 school year begins, CCHS fine arts department teacher Harriet Anderson is preparing the the students involved in the drama program for the upcoming fall performances.
Anderson has selected two one-act shows, one of which will go to one-act play competition. Auditions were held on Sept. 6-7.
“The first one is called ‘Appropriate Audience Behavior’. The actors act as audience members and the audience is looking at actors acting as audience members and all the crazy things that audience members do when they should be paying attention to a play,” Anderson said. “The second one is called the ‘The Lottery’ by Shirley Jackson.”
According to senior and drama board member Ashton Drane, several new students have joined the drama program for a variety of reasons.
“I’ve seen multiple faces that I know personally from local theater, so I know that they have some experience,” Drane said. “I’ve also seen some pretty fresh faces and some people who have very little experience, and are just trying to find something different.”
According to Anderson, the increase in people is opening new opportunities for the department.
“It always increases the quality of shows when we have more people audition because you can pick and choose who you’re putting in the places,” Anderson said. “It creates interest in the program and makes it a much more vibrant, exciting place to be.”
Senior Nelita Rose Willey is excited to see more people involved in the program.
“I’m really excited to be welcoming all the new people to the department,” Willey said. “It’s really nice to see all interested in something that you’re also interested in.”
Junior Robert Isakovich has participated in every show since his freshman year. According to Isakovich, the execution of these plays is made possible through an increase in participants.
“It’s just a lot more talent, and a lot more boys, which is good because last year I was the only boy,” Isakovich said. “Before we would have to find strongly women-involved shows, so now we can get more male-active shows.”
Anderson eagerly anticipates the upcoming shows.
“We look forward to the productions and hope that more people will join us this year,” Anderson said. “We run Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, so it’s a great opportunity to see a little of the Clarke Central arts.”
